Preventing illness starts in the Home

So often when we do not feel well, we look outside of ourselves and our home to determine the cause. The fact is; we are usually the cause!

1. The use of a sponge;

The dirtiest area in everybody’s home is the kitchen., says Dr. Phillip Tierno, author of The Secret Life of Germs. “That’s a result placing dead animal carcasses on our counter tops and within the sink.” This meat can carry E. coli other alternative viruses and bacterium.

spongesMost people clean their counter tops and table following a meal with the one tool found in most kitchens: the sponge. Additionally to sopping up liquids and alternative messes, the room sponge unremarkably carries E. coli and feculent bacterium, and more. As a result, you are cleaning up a mess with something dirtier!

Ironically, the more you clean with the sponge, the more germs you are spreading around. “People leave a wet sponge in the sink and it becomes swarming with millions of bacterium, and with this reservoir of organisms you just cross-contaminate your counter tops, and all surfaces within the room,” Tierno explains.

Solution: dipping sponges into a solution of bleach and water before wiping down surfaces. “That is that the best and least expensive germicide cash can purchase. You’ll be able to clean your counter tops, cutting boards, dishrags, or sponges when every meal preparation.”

Also, once you have used your sponge, make sure to let it dry. Dryness kills off organisms. Another way to kill organisms in your sponge is to microwave it for one to 2 minutes weekly. Put the sponge with some water in a dish, microwave for 1 minute and kill all the germs

2. Pillows

The average person sheds 1.5 million skin cells per hour and perspires one quart each day even doing nothing. The skin cells accumulate in our pillows, and dust mites grow and move in. After five years, 10% of the weight of your pillow is dust mites!

pillowsNow to really gross you out, the average mattress doubles in weight each ten years thanks to the buildup of human hair, bodily secretions, animal hair and dander, plant life mold and spores, bacteria, chemicals, dust, lint, fibers, dust mites, insect elements, etc.!!!! This is what you inhale as you sleep

Solution: Cover the mattress, box springs, and pillows with outer covers you can easily remove and wash.

Allergy-proof coverings seal the mattress and pillow, preventing something from moving in or out, protecting you.

3. Vacuuming

vacuumConventional vacuum cleaners are supposed to suck up and retain massive items of dirt, just like the dirt bunnies we have a tendency to see floating on our floors. However, it is the small dirt particles that pass all through the porous vacuum bags and up into the air. So, whereas our floors might look cleaner when running a vacuum over them, plenty of dust and small particles of dirt, remains

Pet allergens and indoor dirt, contains high concentrations of risky materials like heavy metals, lead, pesticides, and different chemicals, are found in higher concentrations in the smallest particles of the dirt.

The everyday habit of cleansing with a standard home appliance leads to a burst of particles into the air, which settles back down over the course of hours.

Solution: Find for a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Hepa filters, unlike regular vacuum bags, can hold the small particles and not allow them back out into your air.

4. Eye Make Up

makeupYou many not notice that misusing eye makeup will place your health in danger, resulting in an eye infection or injury. Once you share eye makeup or use it for too long, it will become contaminated with microorganism or fungi. To avoid getting an infection, wash your hands before applying eye makeup, avoid sharing yours or trying new “stuff” at the cosmetics counters samples. It is strongly suggested that you discard eye makeup — particularly mascara — after four months.

5. Swimming Pools

poolIn most pools, chlorine is employed to kill germs and stop the passing of unhealthiness and infection. However, chlorine does not completely assure you won’t get sick. An infected pool can cause gastrointestinal problems, skin issues, respiratory issues, or eye, ear, or other infections. To lessen the danger of unhealthiness from an unclean pool, don’t get pool water in your mouth or swallow it and, make sure to take a shower with soap and water before diving in and after you get out.

6. Grilling Meat

grillingI know this is a favorite summertime activity, but is it making you sick! So much for the summer staple: grilling meat creates the cancer-causing compounds polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs). Once fat drips from the meat onto the new grill, and produces smoke, PAHs form. That is what is contained in this delicious-looking burn mark we have a tendency to create on our burger. HCAs form once the meat is grilled at a hot temperature,.

Solution: Limiting your outside grilling, use tin foil, or microwave the meat first as a wise precaution.

Wrapping meat in foil with holes poked in it permits fat to drip off, however, limits the number of fats that hits the flames and comes back onto the flesh, Some the surplus fat may also be eliminated by 1st microwaving meat and selecting cuts of the meat that are lean. There is some proof that marinating meat could lower the number of HCAs formed. As well..

7. Fingernails

nailsWe all know fingernails are harboring dirt, germs, and all kinds of infectious organisms, like pinworms. Folks that don’t observe smart nail hygiene are in danger of becoming sick from the germs found underneath their fingernails or of developing a nail infection. To remain healthy, keep your fingernails clean and cut short, scrub underneath your nails with a nail brush after you wash your hands, do not bite your nails, avoid cutting your cuticles, and certify any grooming tools used on your nails area sanitized.

8. Sitting in Front of the TV

tvSitting down to watch TV is a health hazard even though it is a national pursuit. It is one of our least healthy behaviors, which is significantly enhanced by frequently sleeping in front of the TV and snacking on food that’s high in calories.

When you are sitting there in a veritable trance, you’ll be able to pound on some calories! Today, 1/3 of U.S. population qualifies as obese and another third qualifies as overweight.

Excess weight puts everyone. at the larger risk for heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and some many other diseases. TV is more toxic for our health than the cleaners under our sink!

Solution: Turn it off and take a walk!

What is it?

The purpose of acupuncture is whole body balance! Symptoms indicate an imbalance in Qi (pronounced “Chi”). When Qi is in balance you are in perfect health.

There are highways in the body to carry Qi. Some of these are on the surface of the skin and others run deep into the body and to internal organs. In fact there are 361 acupuncture points and about 10-15 are stimulated in each treatment. These are the same as they were 2500 years ago!

Concluding that acupuncture is a very viable treatment for chronic pain. This was part of a study conducted by the NIH. (National Institute of Health).
The really great news is that because there are no side effects; acupuncture can be done in tandem with ant treatment you are having as a complement. No worry of any adverse reaction.

What does acupuncture treat?

As stated previously, acupuncture treats the entire body not just the symptom.
It has been demonstrated to be a very good source of treatment for chronic pain.
Many of us in the United States who were aware in the ‘70’s learned about acupuncture because President Richard Nixon went to China and while he was there had his phlebitis successfully treated with acupuncture.

A study published in the Fetal Diagnoses and Therapy (Nov-Dec 2003) determined that 76.4% of women treated with acupuncture for a baby in breach were more likely to have a baby in proper delivery position than those without acupuncture treatment.

A 2014 study conducted at the Perelman School of Medicine at U of Penn offer hope for breast cancer survivors to manage cancer-related pain and swelling.

There are also studies that say it has little to no affect. In the journal Anesthesia and Analgesia, Professor David Colquhoun in London and Dr. Steven Novella of Yale University pose that acupuncture, in their words, “is little or no more than a theatrical placebo.”

Just getting medical attention helps…from a drug that cost millions to design to a sugar pill…symptoms are relieved because the patient received attention for a perceived expert.

So you must be the judge! No one says it will do harm and many medicines when compared to placebos fair only as equally well. The best approach is a balance one. Balance both western and eastern medicine in managing your health.

What about those needles?

The needles are just part of the treatment. Many times you will get a lengthier and thorough check of your vitals at the Acupuncturist than you will get with the 5 minutes snatched with your General Practice doctor.

The acupuncturist checks your tongue’s condition as parts of the tongue are linked to different organs, they inspect your face and body, listen for wheezing and even sniff for peculiar odors. They will also check the pulse for flow of Qi, clues on the heart and the state of vital organs.

All before a single needle is introduced.

The FDA now regulates acupuncture needles, just as it does other devices such as surgical scalpels and hypodermic syringes, under good manufacturing practices and single-use standards of sterility.

The needles are very, very thin …not much thicker than a hair…and as a result most people feel nothing or almost nothing when the needle is administered. On the contrary many people feel energized or relaxed.

The depth of the needle depends on the location on your body. A needle in your hand will be very shallow but in a more fleshy area like stomach it can go deeper. The type A personality usually needs a more penetrative approach for a noticeable affect on the body. The condition can also dictate the depth. The average depth is ¼ to ½ inch and because they are so thin it is not felt or felt very slightly.

The needles should not be reused, in this writer’s opinion. I want to see my acupuncturist opening a fresh new packet of needles. Most practitioners use single use needles made from stainless steel, which are disposed of immediately after my session.
Pain is a very relative feeling….with the right practitioner the “pain” or sensation should be non existent or minimal.

The location of the insertion is first swabbed with a disinfectant like alcohol. The number of needles inserted on each visit is on average 15 and they stay inserted while you relax to soothing music for an average of 20 minutes. Sometimes the needles may be swirled or electrically stimulated by the acupuncturist. Most people with have acupuncture 1 per week for about 3 months. The actual time is a decision between you and your acupuncturist.

How to find an Acupuncturist in your location?

Referrals are the best either from your doctor or a friend your trust. You can either go to a medical doctor trained in acupuncture or a certified acupuncturist with his or her own practice. Doctor’s are required 300 hours training in addition to their medical training. Certified Acupuncturists usually have on average 2500 hours of training.

Is it covered by insurance?

Insurance companies often still think of acupuncture as experimental. A 2500-year-old experiment!!! They are beginning to move towards more of the holistic medicines.

More than 3.1 million Americans get acupuncture treatment annually; so it is getting more and more attention from insurers.


Acupuncture is an old and enduring practice that has stood the test of time. Is it right for you? You are the only person who can determine that. The facts are in this article but the feeling od comfort is in you. It can help and it will probably do no harm. It is a great balance of eastern and western medicine. And as will all medicine, getting the attention of a knowledgeable practitioner is always comforting!

Without biotin as a co-factor, many enzymes do not work properly, and serious complications can occur, including varied diseases of the skin, intestinal tract, and nervous system. Biotin can help address high blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes, and is helpful in maintaining healthy hair and nails, decreasing insulin resistance and improving glucose tolerance, and possibly preventing birth defects. It plays a role in energy metabolism, and has been used to treat alopecia, cancer, Crohn’s disease, hair loss, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, Rett syndrome, seborrheic dermatitis, and vaginal candidiasis.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)is one of the safest and most effective nutrients, experts say. It may not be the cure for the common cold (though it’s thought to help prevent more serious complications). But the benefits of vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.

It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts . Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis.  Vitamin D has other roles in human health, including modulation of neuromuscular and immune function and reduction of inflammation.

Vitamin E describes a family of 8 antioxidants, 4 tocopherols and 4 tocotrienols. alpha-tocopherol (a-tocopherol) is the only form of vitamin E that is actively maintained in the human body and is therefore, the form of vitamin E found in the largest quantities in the blood and tissue.  Vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin, protects vitamin A and essential fatty acids from oxidation in the body cells and prevents breakdown of body tissues.

Vitamin K is necessary for normal clotting of blood in humans. Specifically, vitamin K is required for the liver to make factors that are necessary for blood to properly clot (coagulate), including factor II (prothrombin), factor VII (proconvertin), factor IX (thromboplastin component), and factor X (Stuart factor). Other clotting factors that depend on vitamin K are protein C, protein S, and protein Z. Deficiency of vitamin K or disturbances of liver function (for example, severe liver failure) may lead to deficiencies of clotting factors and excess bleeding.

Amino Acids:  The foundation of our body.

Our bodies need twenty different amino acids or proteins that are the building blocks for a healthy body. Nonessential amino acids are those that the body can synthesize for itself, provided there is enough nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen available. Essential amino acids are those supplied by the diet.  They must be consumed as the human body either cannot make them at all or cannot make them in sufficient quantity to meet its needs. ?Of the 20 amino acids required by our bodies, eleven of them are nonessential and nine are essential.

Functions of Amino Acids: Proteins act as enzymes , hormones , and antibodies . They maintain fluid balance and acid and base balance. They also transport substances such as oxygen, vitamins and minerals to target cells throughout the body. Structural proteins, such as collagen and keratin, are responsible for the formation of bones, teeth, hair, and the outer layer of skin and they help maintain the structure of blood vessels and other tissues.

Enzymes are proteins that facilitate chemical reactions without being changed in the process.
Hormones (chemical messengers) are proteins that travel to one or more specific target tissues or organs, and many have important regulatory functions. Insulin , for example, plays a key role in regulating the amount of glucose in the blood. The body manufactures antibodies (giant protein molecules), which combat invading antigens. Antigens are usually foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses that have entered the body and could potentially be harmful. Immunoproteins, also called immunoglobulins or antibodies, defend the body from possible attack by these invaders by binding to the antigens and inactivating them.

If these critical components for a healthy body are not provided as part of a healthy diet, the body will look for other sources for them.  This can include breakdown of our organs, leading to chronic problems such as liver and kidney problems, diabetes and heart disease among others.
